Thirty years ago, Xevius defied his orders by refusing to assassinate the woman who would birth the future mother of the Veredian Titans. Today, his government demands that he atones for that failure by ridding the world of those children before they grow even more powerful. While on that mission, he feels the pull of the Tuning—the psionic call of his true mate. To complicate matters, his woman turns out to be the military leader and protector of the Veredians. With tension rising between her people and the Xelixians, the last thing Kamala needs is a Korlethean assassin hunting the Veredian children. Attempting to eliminate him first should be an easy decision, except for the fact that he’s her soulmate. Swaying him to their side could be the key to solving many of their problems, but at what cost to him and his people? As dire visions and prophecies multiply, Xevius is torn between his conscience, loyalty to his people, and his love for the woman who has captured his heart.
So this is the first time I’m reading anything from this author and I must say the warning at the start about the explicit situations did raise one of my eyebrows in a question. I loved the start chapters which explained what happened so far and where it left off. So many of the “series” type books just throw you into the action and expect you to know everything about the people, the races, the events – that it becomes near impossible to try and read a book from the middle on.
As I kept reading, I found myself getting immersed into this new world. I wanted more, to know where they come from what they did and where they went. So good!
Titans had been the result of genetic manipulations the Korletheans—my people—had performed in order to make our species almost god-like. That arrogance had nearly caused our extinction with our Titan offspring turning against us as they considered us inferior. The years spent hunting and exterminating every last one of them had left our planet in shambles and our people weakened.
Nearly thirty years ago, as part of a life-changing mission, I had deliberately allowed myself to be captured by the Guldans to serve as a stallion in their breeding compounds. My purpose: assassinate Sevina Fein, the innocent young woman who turned out to be Eryon’s soulmate. That mission broke the ruthless, fiercely loyal agent that I had been back then. At twenty-two, I had climbed the ranks of the agency at dizzying speed. I’d never botched an assignment or questioned the orders or motives of the Quorum. I was the Sword of Korlethea, its wrath, and vengeful hand. Woe onto any who dared to threaten our people and our sovereignty.
The sex scenes, when they do arrive, are well designed and not just the pumping and thrusting that made me laugh in other books I’ve read recently
All but falling onto her back, Kamala drew me to her, spreading her legs for me to lie on top of her. The markings on her shoulders, naturally darker during her season, quite literally turned near black before my eyes. I didn’t quite understand what had triggered such a strong response from her. Had I pushed some of my emotions towards her? Empaths often developed an empathic bond with their mates, allowing them to perceive some of our emotions as we felt theirs. It usually took months, sometimes years with non-Korlethean partners. Had it already begun forming between us? I didn’t know, and right now, I didn’t care. The powerful need riding her slammed into me, her emotions screaming for me to take her, driving me insane with desire. Kamala’s fingers slipped under the elastic band of my shaal to settle on my ass. Her fingers dug into my cheeks, as she lifted her pelvis. Breaking the kiss, my lips latched onto her neck, sucking on her markings. My cock stiffened in response to her throaty moan and the sharp sting of her nails sinking into my flesh. Holding my weight on my forearm, I lifted her short skirt with my free hand and savagely ripped off her thong, my fingers diving into her core. My mate’s back arched off the floor as she cried out her approval. She was soaking wet, her inner walls convulsing with impatience.
Yep, definitely got my attention! Spoke too soon about the pumping and thrusting though! about 50 pages later on, it begins!
Pounding into me with ferocity, Xevius pinned my wrists down on each side of me. His mouth sucked and nipped at my nipples with a passion just shy of brutality. [..]
“Do you understand how I feel about you, my mate? Do you have any idea how much I love you?” Xevius said almost angrily.
Cue in nodding from my confused self! While the story didn’t make sense 100% for me (due to the previous 4 books I’ve missed), I did like the charcters.
Kamala is an awesome female character, strong, powerful and with a pretty good heart too. Well, beautiful is always nice too. She can totally fight and finds her perfect match to share her life. He’s hot, strong and powerful like her. But from a different place with different beliefs. They have a dangerous and very complicated path ahead if they want to be together.
